In answer to the current focus on food safety, we at Mpact Versapak wish to assure our customers that we continue to respect the strict quality standards of our British Retail Consortium (BRC) certification, the first packaging standard in the world to be recognised by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI).
There are two types of BRC certification* depending on the packaging’s direct contact with food – ‘high hygiene’ and ‘basic hygiene’. As an “A certified” BRC member with ‘high hygiene’ status, Mpact Versapak may not use recycled post-consumer polystyrene waste in tray manufacturing. In fact, there is currently no post-consumer waste or any other externally sourced recycled polystyrene that is approved for use within our sector.
As part of our BRC certification and ethical practices, Mpact Versapak commit not to:
- Use any local or imported recycled polystyrene;
- Neglect any manufacturing commitments, resulting in the highest quality products;
- Fail to ensure full traceability of raw materials;
- Supply any product that is not 100% compliant with BRC regulations.
Consumer support in ethical manufacturing
At Mpact Versapak we encourage our customers and distributors to make responsible purchases that will benefit the industry, our economy and the environment, whilst considering the South African consumers’ health and safety as priority. The BRC standard is in fact accepted and often required by leading industry players around the world when approving their suppliers, helping to reduce waste and prevent recalls or reject products.
Although it is not possible to visually tell which products are BRC certified and which are not, using non-certified products can have very negative consequences, such as food contamination or not being able to trace a product back to its manufacturing process. BRC certification also requires that food must not be contaminated by any packaging material or elements at the factory during processing. Lastly, it ensures the use of only approved raw materials.
